Top Goat Milk Supplements for Dogs

Goat’s milk has become very popular in recent years among dog owners! It’s sold in most pet stores and available to purchase online from many raw dog food and supplement brands. It’s nutrient profile makes it an excellent supplement to include in your dog’s diet.

Why Goat’s Milk?

Personally, I have been feeding our dogs goat’s milk for years to add extra palatability. Most dog’s LOVE the taste, and it’s a great way to entice picky dogs to eat for food.

But then why not cow’s milk? Like many humans, many dog’s are lactose intolerant and have difficulty digesting cow’s milk. So while dog’s may love a cup of cow’s milk in their bowl, it can cause vomiting, diarrhea and flatulence. Cow’s milk also contains a large amount of fat, natural sugar and calories, so it’s simply not worth the risk of your dog having an upset stomach.

Goat’s Milk benefits

Goat’s milk does contain lactose, but unpasteurized goat’s milk also contains the lactase enzyme which helps breaks down lactose. In addition, the smaller fat globules and protein structure in goat’s milk make it easier on the digestive system. It’s also a great source of natural probiotics, which can further help break down food particles in the gut.

Compared to cow’s milk, goat’s milk has more of many beneficial nutrients, like protein, calcium, phosphorous, vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium. Vitamins A and C are powerful antioxidants that help protect your dog against infection and diseases. The minerals and fatty acids in goat’s milk also help strengthen teeth and bones and improve your dog’s skin and coat.

As I already mentioned, goat’s milk is an excellent nutritious supplement to entice your picky dog to eat! Add some to their current food, and they’ll likely want to eat every last bit. It’s also a great way to hydrate dry dog food.

One thing to note: Goat’s milk also contains more fat and calories than cow’s milk, which is great if you’re wanting to add more calories for an underweight dog. However, if your dog is maintaining or needs to lose weight, you’ll want to factor this into their daily calorie needs to avoid excess weight gain.

As you can see, goat’s milk contains a unique nutrient profile that can make it easier to digest and offer many other benefits as well! We tried out some of the most popular goat milk supplements on the market for dogs to review in this blog. I also compiled a list of recipes you can make with goats milk! Some of the top goat milk supplements for dogs on the market today

Goat Milk Supplements

The two most common forms of goat’s milk supplements sold is powdered and fresh. Fresh goat’s milk for dogs can be purchased at many pet stores, online from raw dog food companies or in person at a local farm. If purchased online, it’s sent to your door frozen and can be stored in your freezer until you’re ready to feed. Nutrient wise, powdered and fresh milk are near identical, so it’s really about what you (and your dog) prefer!

Often pet food brands add other ingredients to their fresh or powdered goat’s milk for even more added benefits. Other goat milk products include goat colostrum, goat whip and even dog food made with goat’s milk. See more info on these products below.

Fresh Goats Milk

Raw from the farm

Personally, I prefer fresh, raw goat’s milk from a local farm for my dog’s. If you know your dogs do well on goat’s milk, you can buy it by the gallon at a much more affordable price vs buying fresh from a pet food company. I’m currently paying $10/gallon for raw goat’s milk from a local farm, and many farms sell it even cheaper than this! This is going to be your most natural, minimally processed option as well.

If you’re unable to find a farm near you that sells raw goats milk, the below are the next best options for fresh goats milk.

Answers Pet Food Goat Milk

ANSWERS Pet Food

Answers Pet Food is a popular raw pet food brand that uses organic and pasture raised meat, as well as adding superfoods for added nourishment. What makes Answers stand apart with their goat milk supplement is that it’s fermented, which adds good bacteria for a healthy gut. From their website, “Fermentation supports healthy immune function by increasing the B-vitamins, digestive enzymes, antioxidants, and lactic acid that fight off harmful bacteria.”

Answers Pet Food Fermented Raw Goat Milk

As mentioned earlier, raw goats milk already contains probiotics. Because of their fermentation process, Answers’ fermented raw goat’s milk contains billions of probiotics per ounce! Another thing to note on this goat’s milk is the fermentation process causes their milk to curdle and even have a sour smell. This just means the good bacteria is predigesting it, and is completely safe to feed!

Most of the batches will fall somewhere in the middle, with a slight sour smell and small to medium curds throughout. All will continue to ferment in the fridge throughout the 30 days, getting more curdled and the sour smell will increase. In fact, the more curds the safer and more nutrient dense the milk is, so continue to feed for the entire 30 days.

You can use Answers’ Where to Buy Tool to see where it’s sold near you, or purchase online.

Bones & Co Goat Milk and Goat Kefir

Bones & Co.

Bones & Co is a raw dog food brand focused on a ketogenic diet for dogs - low carbs and healthy fats. Their foods are made with human-grade meat from grass-fed and cage-free animals. Their raw goat’s milk has added probiotics and all the benefits already discussed in this blog post.

In addition to their goat’s milk, Bones & Co offers Goat Kefir, which is fermented goats milk. We discussed this above under Answers Pet Food - fermented goat’s milk is similar to regular goat’s milk but with even more probiotic support. It has a thicker and creamier texture than raw goat’s milk and is great for enrichment toys, a food topper or a standalone supplement.

Bones & Co is located around the U.S. in pet retailers. Use their Where to Buy tool to see where it’s available near you.

BJ’s Raw

BJ’s Raw is a raw dog food company that offers Prey Model Raw based diets made with all-natural ingredients. They offer five varieties of raw goat’s milk: Raw Goat Milk, Kefir Goat Milk, Protein+ Raw Goat Milk, Blueberry Raw Goat Milk and Strawberry Goat Milk. I’ve already discussed the many benefits of Raw Goat Milk and Kefir Goat Milk, so I’ll focus more on their special varieties.

BJ’s Protein+ variety contains raw eggs for even more added benefit. It’s rich in Omega-3’s and high quality protein, to further skin & coat benefits! Their Strawberry Raw Goat Milk adds strawberries for added antioxidants. It also provides Vitamin C & K, Manganese and Fiber for further immune and digestive support. Similarly, their Blueberry Raw Goat Milk adds anti-oxidant rich blueberries to help enhance digestion and immune health.

Boss Dog is a raw dog food brand that adds probiotics to all their foods, treats and supplements. They offer five varieties of raw goat’s milk: Original, Perfectly Pumpkin, Simply Spinach, Consistently Carrot and Apple & Cranberry. As with some other brands, they add probiotics to their milk to further add good bacteria to the gut. However, they’re unique in adding taurine and DHA as well to help support brain function, anti-inflammatory hormone production and a healthy skin & coat.

Powdered Goat Milk Supplements

Raw Paws Pet Food

Raw Paws Pet Food sells powdered Whole Grade A goat’s milk. The benefits of powdered milk over fresh milk is shelf life and ease of shipping. It can also be quite a bit cheaper for the same yield of milk. Just a small 7 ounce jar will yield 2.25 gallons of goats milk! You can serve as a dry topper, or rehydrate with water. Our dogs love powdered goats milk just as much as fresh!

Raw Paws is available to purchase online, and you can use this link to save $30 on your first order!

Fera Pets

Fera Pets also sells powdered goat’s milk, but they’re unique in that they also offer other important benefits! They offer five varieties: Multivitamin, Hip & Joint, Skin & Coat, Calm and Immune. These are all powerful supplements, and I would say the ideal solution for dogs that are picky eating their daily supplement chews. For instance, German Shepherds and other large breeds benefit from a daily hip & joint supplement, which are often chews. I have a few picky dogs that won’t each these, but they’ll readily drink the Fera Pet Hip & Joint Goat Milk!

See more details about each variety below:

  • Multivitamin - A mixture of essential vitamins and minerals added to their whole goat cream powder, as well additional probiotics for gut health

  • Hip & Joint - Combines three of the most popular ingredients in a hip & joint supplement: MSM, Glucosamine and Green Lipped Mussel

  • Skin & Coat - Combines Collagen, Biotin and Vitamin C for healthier skin and shinier coat

  • Calm - Combines Ashwagandha, L-theanine and Passion Flower to help promote rest and relaxation during stressful times

  • Immune - Combines Colostrum, Turkey Tail and probiotics to help support a healthy immune system

Other Goat Milk Products

Bones & Co

I talked about Bones & Co’s goat’s milk and goat kefir above, and they also another unique goat’s milk product - Goat Whip. This a scoopable, high fat raw goat cream that is excellent for enrichment toys and is a great alternative to peanut butter, or you can simply dollop some on your pet’s food as a yummy, nutritious topper. It also contains beef gelatin for added digestive health! You can even feed it frozen as a healthy alternative to doggy ice cream.

BJs Raw

In addition their raw goat’s milk and goat kefir, BJ’s also offers goat colostrum! Colostrum is the first milk produced by lactating goats and is a very potent and nutritious product. It’s considered a superfood by many, and is great for dogs of all ages. Colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins, which helps pets suffering from diarrhea or other stomach issues. It helps balance the good and bad bacteria in the gut for better nutrient absorption, and also helps to improve the immune system!

RAWZ canned dog food made with goats milk

Rawz

RAWZ is a dog food company that sells minimally processes pet kibble and canned food. They created the food to be a compliment to raw or homemade diets because their food is never rendered, and their tag line is “The Next Best Thing to Feeding Raw”. Instead of using meat meal, RAWZ uses dehydrated meat because it’s a much better concentration of protein. They also gently cook their food at low temperatures to help retain protein and amino acids.

So why are they mentioned in a goat’s milk blog? Four of their canned dog food recipes contain goat’s milk! It’s the fourth ingredient, so it makes up a large part of the food. They state they include goat’s milk for all the same benefits mentioned above: it aids in digestion, includes antioxidants to help protect the immune system, and it reduces inflammation.

RAWZ does not sell to Chewy, Petco, Petsmart or other mass merchants because they believe Independent Retailers offer the best possible nutritional expertise. What’s best is that they donate 100% of their profits (after taxes and reserves) to four main causes: cat and dog rescues, providing service dogs, spinal cord injury and traumatic brain injury causes. You can use their Where to Buy tool to see where you can find it near you!

Price Comparison

Chart comparing prices for popular goat milk supplements for dogs

There’s no denying goat’s milk is very expensive, especially when you’re feeding it daily to large dogs! I put together this price comparison to share the most affordable options available. This comparison just includes the price for plain goat’s milk, and not the specialty supplements. This is also just the price of the milk and not any additional taxes or shipping costs.

Meeka enjoying a homemade goat's milk puppucino

Goat Milk Puppucino

This is a modified version of a recipe I found online for whipped cream that is safe for your pup! What’s better than a homemade pup cup? Fresh raw goats milk would probably work best for this as full fat milk will whip better! The unflavored gelatin will help the milk maintain its volume once whipped and is perfectly save for your dog. Add a dollop to your dog’s food, give as a treat or add it to their Kong!

Note: If this turns out more like milk jelly/jello instead of whipped cream, then that’s a-ok! Your dog will still absolutely love it!

Ingredients
  • 2 tsp of unflavored gelatin

  • 1 1/4 cups of cold fresh raw goats milk

Recipe
  1. Sprinkle 2 teaspoons of gelatin over 1/4 cup of cold milk. Stir in and let sit for 5-10 minutes to thicken.

  2. Once the gelatin has thickened, microwave for 15-30 seconds until liquified.

  3. Combine 1 cup of cold milk with the gelatin mixture. Stir well and refrigerate for 20 minutes.

  4. Once chilled, whisk until the milk grows thick and holds peaks.
